Course objectives:
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with basic theoretical concepts in the field of Translation Studies, including basic concepts, strategies and tools used in translation. The emphasis is put on searching for different types of equivalence (formal, textual, pragmatic; on word, phrase, sentence or text level) and on using translation techniques adequate for particular tasks. Also, the methods of translation of various txt types and genres are discussed in greater detail.

1. Student is familiar with various types of translations and the basic theories of translation, including specialist terminology (m-W-1/P6S_WG)
2. Student understands what is meant by translation competence and has an awareness of what it means to be a professional translator (m-W-2/P6S_WK)

3. Student can use the techniques of localized translation, multimedia translation and translation for the publishing industry, as well as how to employ those styles and skills in their translations. (m-U-1/P6S_UW)
4. Student can understand general texts from various areas including those of a complex nature. They are well aware of the different steps necessary to take in order to render a qualitatively valid translation. (m-U-2/P6S_UW)

5. Student recognizes and formulates ethical and cultural issues related to their own translation work, responsibility before their colleagues and other members of the society (m-K-1/P6S_KR)
6. Student shapes their own views regarding the significance of reliable translation for the development of the society and its general and specialized information needs (m-K-2/P6S_KK)
Assessment criteria
Forms of eveluation of learning outcomes:
1. Written tests (mid term and end of term) 55% of the final grade (outcomes 1,2,3,4,5,6)
2. Informed participation 45% of the final grade (outcomes 1,2,3,4,5,6)
