Professional status:

A graduate of the second level degree of full-time studies holds a thorough knowledge covering the selected major (literary studies, linguistics or cultural studies), is characterized by open attitude towards other languages and cultures and by the awareness of language diversity. Upon completion of their studies, a graduate is prepared to work as a translator/interpreter, in publishing houses, as a journal editor, in cultural and research institutions. They are additionally prepared to continue education and take up the third level (doctoral degree) of studies.

Teaching standards

Learning outcomes for the course French studies approved pursuant to the resolution 147/2008-2012 of the Senate on 26.04.2012. Programme of studies as definined by the Resolution of the Faculty Board Philology.
4.2.1. The canon of Romance philology: A. Basic subjects module, B. Specialized subjects module (Literature studies unit, Culture studies unit, Linguistics unit), C. Elecitve subjects module, D. Other obligatory modules;
4.2.2. Variable courses: the student, during the studies, selects 3 courses beyond the curriculum for 2 ECTS points, in the quantity necessary to obtain the necessary points in the particular semesters, to the sum of 30 ECTS points.

4.3. Details concerning the program, as well as the individual achievements, the obtained grades/credit points (ECTS). The condition for passing the subject is obtaining a positive grade for classes planned in the curriculum. The condition of approval for examination is obtaining a positive grade for classes planned in the curriculum. The student has to write a master's thesis by the end of the 4th semester, and then present it with a positive result in front of the Commission of the Faculty during the master's examination. The master's examination consists of two parts: examination related to specialized knowledge from the studies and defense of the master's thesis. The final grade on the diploma constitutes: ½ - the arithmetic mean of the examination grades and passing grades entered to the student index book, ¼ - grade of the master's thesis, ¼ - the diploma examination grade. Graduating the studies requires 120 ECTS points (30 points in each semester).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

Has extended knowledge of the place and importance of Romance philology in relation to humanities, as well as the specific objective and methodological nature of Romance philology;
Knows the philological terminology in Polish, as well as its application in related disciplines at an advanced level;
Knows the philological terminology in French, as well as its application in related disciplines at an advanced level;
Has thorough knowledge about relations between the main subdisciplines of philology in the scope of Romance philology;
Has organized and well-developed knowledge about the main research fields within the units of philological subdisciplines 1) linguistics, 2) literary studies, 3) culture studies with regard to Romance philology;
Knows and understands the main directions of contemporary studies of Romance philology, has well-developed knowledge of the connections of Romance philology with other fields of knowledge;
Knows and understands at an advanced level the historical character of shaping trends and directions in Polish and French literature, as well as in Polish and French language;
Has versatile knowledge of the ideas and arguments of the selected authors within the scope of Romance philology on the basis of independent reading of their works;
Has knowledge and thorough understanding of the dependence between shaping of philological ideas within the scope of Romance philology and changes in the culture and society;
Knows research methods and argumentative strategies relevant for one of the units of major philological subdisciplines 1) linguistics, 2) literary studies, 3) culture studies with regard to Romance philology;
Has broad knowledge about the presence of philological ideas within the scope of French literary studies, linguistics and culture studies in the works of Polish culture, as well as about the involvement of philologists in the cultural life of the country;
Has thorough knowledge of the methods of interpretation of a literary text in the scope of French literary studies and culture studies;
Uses search tools focused on the philological fields in the scope of French literary studies, linguistics and culture studies;
Knows the principles of publishing a philological text and has information about the readers of philological literature;
is familiar with the most important traditional and contemporary trends and directions of research in Romance philology, understands their historical and cultural determinants;
Has knowledge related to the protection of industrial property and the copyright;

Skills:

Is able to find, analyze, assess, select and use information from written and electronic sources;
independently acquires knowledge and expands research skills, as well as plans research projects;
Independently reads and interprets advanced literary, journalistic, utility and scientific texts in Polish and French;
Comprehensively listens to advanced oral presentations;
Correctly applies the known philological terminology in the scope of Romance philology;
Aptly defines the notions of the common language and correctly designs the definitions of own terms used in own statements;
Is able to consistently and precisely produce statements in speech and in writing (in native language and in French), is able to produce extensive oral and written justifications for topics concerning selected issues, using both the achievements of philological sciences, as well as other disciplines;
Formulates, in speech and in writing, problems, theses, as well as expresses own views concerning social and worldview issues;
Knows the communication strategies and skillfully uses them in discourse;
Writes monographic studies in Polish and French on the basis of literature selected on his/her own;
Translates on his/her own, from Polish into French and from French into Polish, selected comprehensive fragments of literary, journalistic, scientific and utility texts;
Detects the dependence between shaping of literary trends and directions within the scope of Romance philology and the social, historical and cultural processes;
Is able to efficiently communicate, with the use of various communication channels and techniques, with specialists of Romance philology, as well as with recipients from outside the group of specialists, using modern technological solutions;
Conducts research work under the supervision of a scientific supervisor or a manager of a research team;
Detects the dependence between theses of the examined written and oral philological statements in the scope of Romance philology, prepares, presents and interprets research results;
Is able to independently acquire knowledge and develop professional skills, using various sources (in the native language and in French), as well as modern technologies;
Understands different perception of life by representatives of other nations and cultures;

Social competences:

Is aware of his/her level of knowledge and skills, understands the need for continuous supplementary education and personal development, makes self-assessment of his/her competences;
Appreciates the importance of philological sciences in the system of sciences and is aware of their specific nature;
is open to new ideas and willing to change opinions in the light of the available data and arguments;
Formulates proposals of solutions on his/her own, on the basis of creative analysis of new situations and problems;
Independently undertakes and initiates professional activities; plans and organizes their progress;
is aware of the existence of ethical dimension in scientific studies;
Notices and formulates ethical problems related to his/her own research and publication work, responsibility before the co-workers and other members of the society, as well as is active in solving these problems;
Effectively organizes his/her own work and critically assess its level of progress;
Is able to work in a team, is able to assume and determine common goals and actions, is able to assume the role of a leader in a team;
Is aware of the responsibility for preservation of cultural heritage of the region, country, Europe and the world;
