 STUDYING AT ENGLISH PHILOLOGY – Teacher Training Programme

If you are already professionally active and wish to link your academic growth with the continuous development of linguistic skills and gain teaching qualifications to teach English as a foreign language at all educational levels, study part time English Philology – Teacher Training Programme at MA level at the University of Opole. Here, apart from developing practical language skills at a high C2 proficiency level of CEFR for languages, students deepen their knowledge and academic skills in Applied Linguistics and English as a Foreign Language methodology as well as develop their practical skills in the context of teaching English.

The classes on part time studies are planned for every Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 20:00. Some courses are conducted online, others are held in classrooms on the university site. All lecturers are available to students during their office hours to discuss academic issues relating to the courses. 

The graduates gain qualifications to teach English in all types of schools. Master of Arts graduate studies finish with an MA defense and an MA degree. Graduate studies also prepare candidates for doctoral studies in a similar field.

 WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AT OPOLE UNIVERSITY?

A professional team of academic teachers and lecturers supports and guides the undergraduates in their intellectual growth. Students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology and a modern computer room with several stands.Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English-speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching).

 STUDENT MOBILITY PERSPECTIVES

Our students can enroll in an exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by the University of Opole, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language. Our partners are, among others, in Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, HungarySpain, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Germany, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and Italy. Students can also participate in study visits connected with the study program and do their internship abroad (more information available at www.erasmus.uni.opole.pl).

 FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS

Our students finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking at C2 level, ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a teaching career. They are prepared to teach English to all age groups and all school types. They receive ministerial qualifications to teach English in public schools at level 2 (primary school – high elementary – grades 4-8) and level 3 (secondary school). The acquired skills and knowledge enable them to seek employment in public and private schools at all educational levels, language schools as well as cultural institutions, business or service sectors that require proficient command of English and liberal arts education.

The annual cost of studying at English Philology in the 2024-2025 academic year is as follows:

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduates of first-cycle studies in philology with a C1 level of Englishare eligible to apply for MA level studies in English Philology Teacher Training Programme. The acceptance will be based on the results of the BA diploma grade. The candidates need to provide a certificate confirming their command of English at C1 level of CEFR for languages.

Access to further studies:

The second-cycle studies prepare graduates for further education at the third-cycle studies.

Professional status:

Graduates of English Philology – Teacher Training Programme have general humanistic education, including general linguistic education. Their command of oral and written English is at C2 level of CEFR for Languages. Graduates have specialist knowledge of applied linguistics, theories and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language. The graduate received qualifications to teach English in public schools at level 2 (primary school – high elementary – grades 4-8) and level 3 (secondary school) according to the Ministry of Education and Science. The graduate is prepared to teach English to all age groups and all school types. The acquired skills and knowledge enable them to seek employment in public and private schools at all educational levels, language schools as well as cultural institutions, business or service sectors that require proficient command of English. The study programme covers 570 hours of teacher training including 150 hours of internship at school.

Graduate of English Philology Teacher Training Programme knows and understands
• the position and role of philological sciences and their place among the humanities as well as the analytical and methodological tools used in them
• extended formal terminology and linguistic theories
• the role of the English language as a cognitive medium and a tool used in studying
• a wide range of analytical and interpretative methods relating to various cultural products analyzed within linguistics, including theories and research schools in the field of language acquisition
• main development trends and achievements in applied linguistics
• an extensive range of details of academic discourse in relation to English linguistics
• legal, ethical and linguistic determinants of one's professional activity
• the principles of copyright and its protection in relation to various products of culture, in particular in the field of philology
• content related to preparation for the teaching profession (knowledge included in a separate overview) - Education Standards for Teachers

Graduate of English Philology Teacher Training Programme can
• use terminology and take theoretical positions resulting from English studies in order to formulate and solve problems or carry out tasks of a formal and professional nature
• be innovative in solving complex and new problems by making the right choices, evaluating and critically interpreting the acquired knowledge
• refer to arguments and formulate logical conclusions using appropriate methods and extensive tools, adapting them to new needs and developing them from scratch
• read and create advanced English-language tests and prepare advanced presentations in the field of English philology, using formal sources
• use English at C2 level, with particular emphasis on academic discourse, taking part in specialist communication and conducting a formalized debate
• independently formulate research problems and use appropriate tools and methods to analyze them and discuss them with other specialists in the field of English philology, with particular emphasis on statistical analysis
• manage the work of the group to develop language skills and study techniques for successful learning
• use the acquired knowledge and skills to deepen academic interests in the intra- and interdisciplinary dimension
• use information and communication techniques in the teacher's professional work
• use a second foreign language at the B2 + level
