ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Polish Studies is a special programme created for those of you who want to learn Central European culture, language, and traditions. Also, if you want to gain proficiency in both Polish and English languages, and afterwards work for multinational companies in Poland and abroad, Polish Studies is a programme you must choose. Students pursue an intensive and individualized course of study with experienced professors who are committed to facilitating students’ linguistic, intellectual and social development. 

ADVANTAGES OF THE PROGRAMME

Studying this programme, you will learn about both Polish and English language, literature, and culture. Since we have a multicultural environment at our University, you will also get an opportunity to meet and make friends with people from other parts of the world. The programme is created in a flexible way, so you can choose modules from different departments that interest you most. Even though the entire BA programme lasts 3 years, you can study with us for only a year on a special course.

WORK OPPORTUNITIES AND FURTHER EDUCATION OPTIONS

Graduates may seek employment requiring two foreign languages (English C1 and Polish B2) and knowledge of Polish, European culture.

Graduates can undertake MA studies at the University of Opole not only in Polish, but also in English. For those who plan to pursue a PhD degree, there is an programme in English Language and Literature.

Undergraduate Philology studies prepare for further education in graduate studies in humanities.

Professional status:

The undergraduates of Philology, Speciality: Polish Studies, become highly trained professional communicators in two languages English and Polish with a thorough knowledge of Polish culture, literature, history and other aspects. They are proficient in English at C1 level and in Polish at B2 level and have such skills as adaptability, creativity and criticality. They have specialist knowledge of the main trends in intercultural communication, European civilization, European languages, art and culture with the main focus on the Polish language, history, culture, literature, cinema and art in the European context. They have acquired the skills of accessing, analyzing and critically evaluating information in the public domain, as well as presenting it in a variety of forms, genres and topics. With respect to social competences, they develop sensitivity to intercultural differences in the use of English and Polish and ethical standards in public communication. The undergraduates can find employment in a broad range of fields involving international public communication requiring both English and Polish such as advertising, journalism, publishing, public relations and public affairs, business communication, marketing, translation and various public services. They may also be employed in public administration on a regional, national or international level or work for cultural institutions, corporations or NGOs.

Teaching standards

A graduate of Polish Studies will:
be familiar with the basic concepts of intercultural communication and understand selected issues of intercultural communication as well as the basics of the functioning of language in society and linguistic diversity of Europe;
know the most important moments in the history of Poland in relation to Europe and the world, understand the significance and functioning of regional cultures in Europe and Poland, have a basic knowledge of Poland’s neighbours and national minorities living in Poland, as well as of Poles living outside the country;
know the most important moments in the process of the formation of European culture, understand the impact of the Christian tradition, of which the Western culture has grown out, recognize main ideas and movements in European culture and art;
have a basic knowledge of the characteristics of selected individual Polish artists and products of culture, know the most important trends and creators of the Polish cinema and theatre;
know the most important texts of European literature selected from the canon, recognize the basic issues and literary themes in different European literatures, including the Polish literature as well as have a basic knowledge of the links of European literature with history, philosophy, culture.

A graduate of Polish Studies will be able to:
analyse selected phenomena in their cultural context, analyse elements of Polish culture in comparison with other national cultures, recognize the intercultural differences and analyse their impact on communication processes, diagnose causes of cultural conflicts;
analyse problems of cultural minorities and cultures of regions in Poland and Europe;
recognize the most famous masterpieces of literature, cinema and European art, including Polish ones as well as implement rudimentary research skills for competent analysis and interpretation of the phenomena in the field of literature, analyse the works included in the canon of European literature in the context of social, religious, and cultural changes in Europe;
use a basic knowledge of cultural processes in written and oral form, performed within the framework of studied issues;
use the knowledge and experience connected with the knowledge of Polish culture to effectively communicate with the milieu.

A graduate of Polish Studies is proficient in English at C1 level and in Polish at B2 level and is equipped with such skills as adaptability, creative thinking and critical analysis.
