Master's degree studies part time, 2 years Language: English | Jump to: Opis ogólnySTUDY ENGLISH PHILOLOGY Our MA graduate programme offers the opportunity to grow and interact in a challenging academic environment. Studying English Philology at MA level, apart from developing practical language skills at a high C2 proficiency level of CEFR for languages, encompasses deepening students’ knowledge of selected fields of philological studies. The students may choose to follow one of offered academic paths and pursue their MA thesis in: Literary studies/Cultural studies or Linguistics/Translation studies. WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AT OPOLE UNIVERSITY? A professional team of academic teachers and lecturers supports and guides the graduates in their intellectual growth. The students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology and modern computer room with several stands. Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of Anglo-Saxon literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching). STUDENT MOBILITY PERSPECTIVES Our students can enroll in a student exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by Opole University, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language. Our partners are, among others, in Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Cyprus. FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS Graduates of English Philology finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking at C2 level, ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a career in, for example: ·translation and interpretation bureaus ·public relations ·publishing houses ·advertising agencies ·fundraising organizations ·commercial, corporate or other business institutions ·research institutes ·many other fields that require proficient knowledge of English and liberal arts education. A graduate of English Philology knows and understands in the advanced degree:
- selected facts, objects and phenomena and relevant methods and linguistic theories, explaining complex dependencies between them, forming the advanced general knowledge in the field of philology, and forming its theoretical basis;
- well-structured and theoretically sound general key issues and selected issues related to the field of study;
- the main trends of the development of scientific disciplines relevant to philology;
- specificity of the subject and methodology of philological sciences, their latest achievements and directions of development;
- theories as well as advanced methodology and terminology of linguistics, literature and culture studies;
- methods of analysis and interpretation of texts and culture products, within selected traditions, theories and research schools in linguistics, literature and culture studies;
- principles of the operation of systems and institutions relevant to the scope of the professional activity appropriate for philology (inter alia, in the fields of education, culture, media, translation, or business service).
As well as:
- fundamental dilemmas of modern philology in terms of its research and application for solving social problems;
- the basic economic, legal and other considerations, and concepts connected with philological research and its application;
- rules of the protection of intellectual and industrial copyright, intellectual property management, and the form of development of individual entrepreneurship;
- the contents associated with a selected philological speciality.
A graduate of English Philology is able to:
- use their philological knowledge –that is formulate and solve complex and unusual problems concerning the use of language;
- use their linguistic, literary and cultural knowledge;
- innovatively perform tasks in not fully predictable conditions thanks to a proper selection of sources and information drawn from them, evaluation, critical analysis, synthesis, and creative interpretation of that information as well as selection and use of appropriate methods and tools, including advanced information and communication techniques (ICT);
- formulate and analyse research problems, choose methods and tools for solving them, synthesize various ideas and viewpoints using knowledge of linguistics, literature and culture studies (with the possibility of taking into account the knowledge of related sciences);
- carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of selected texts and works of culture appropriate for philology, using creative and original methods for the evaluation of their relevance and impact in the historical and cultural process;
- communicate on specialist topics with different groups of recipients;
- conduct a debate;
- use English as a foreign language at the level of C2 of the Common European Framework for Languages and in the scope of specialist terminology;
- manage a team;
- individually plan and carry out their own learning throughout life and guide others in this respect;
- use the knowledge and experience associated with the selected philological speciality.
A graduate of English Philology is ready to:
- critically assess received contents, recognise the importance of knowledge of the language in solving cognitive practical problems;
- fulfil social obligations, instigate and organise actions for social environment, initiate actions for public interest, think and act resourcefully;
- responsibly exercise professional roles, taking into account the changing needs of society, including: developing the profession, maintaining the ethos of the profession, respecting and developing the rules of professional ethics and acting for compliance with these principles;
- participate in cultural life and use its various forms;
- function competently, responsibly and ethically within the area defined by the selected philological speciality.
