Academic Writing for Social Scientists 02.06-S2-EN-AW
The detailed course content comprises of:
The characteristics of academic writing in social sciences in comparison with other types of writing.
Fallacies.
Formal and informal language.
Use of English in scientific papers: vocabulary adjustment.
Use of English in scientific papers: features of grammar and style.
Plagiarism as the problem related to all types of writing. Types of plagiarism.
Building in-text citations and bibliography according to the APA style.
Paraphrasing and summaries.
Technical side of the paper: from the title page to the appendix.
Argumentative essay - constructing introduction, a thesis statement, topic sentences, arguments, conclusions.
Analysis of students’ final papers.

a student:
1. has broad knowledge on the characteristic features of social sciences(S2A_W01)
2. has advanced knowledge of the chosen methods and ways of description (S2A_W06)
3. has basic knowledge concerning social communication (S2A_W08)
4. understands basic issues related to the protection of author’s rights and managing intellectual property (S2A_W10)
Skills
a student:
5. can correctly interpret and explain social phenomena (S2A_U01)
6. is able to formulate own opinions and use critical methods of analysis (S2A_U02)
7. is able to analyse the features of social processes as well as formulate and verify simple assumptions (S2A_U03)
8. has advanced ability of preparing various writing assignments in foreign language (S2A_U09)

Delivering a final paper (key factor in assessment) - 60%
Doing writing assignments - 20%
Active participation in the classes - 20%
Evaluation of the final paper(scale of evaluation 2-5)
Assessing writing assignments (scale of evaluation 2-5)
Active participation in classes and students’ contribution to the assigned tasks (scale of evaluation 2-5, based on points gathered during classes)
