English for internationalisation purposes 1.2.5-EC-EIP
Course objectives
English for Internationalization Purposes is designed to enhance students' practical language skills for today's global professional & academic environment. The course is delivered in an authentic international context, where students work in mixed international groups in a collaborative way and develop their language proficiency, practise using Internet technology to communicate, and increase their intercultural awareness. The course utilizes advanced online teaching & learning capabilities through the Moodle platform.
During the course students learn how to function effectively in an English-speaking professional environment, create coherent & meaningful presentations in English, and participate actively and contribute to discussions in English about topics relevant to internationalization purposes.

Course content
After a first introductory section (About the course), the contents and activities are divided into 5 units as follows:
UNIT 1: Getting to know you (worth 10% of the final grade):
Part 1: Registration and introduction
- Introduce yourself on the course Cozy Café Padlet and interact with your course mates;
- Assign yourself to a mixed workgroup;
- Take the pre-course survey: Answer quick and easy questions about your English;
- previous experience of online courses, learning style, expectations from the course and your teachers.
Part 2: More about yourself
- Record a one-minute video with your smartphone documenting a single moment in your typical day;
- Upload it in your group’s media collection;
- Watch your groupmates’ videos and ask each of them one question about it;
- Answer the questions that you’ve been asked.
UNIT 2: Your dream job (worth 30% of the final grade):
Part 1: Prezumé
- Watch a tutorial about creating a Prézumé (an ‘animated’ CV, made with the
presentation software Prezi) and create your own.
Part 2: Elevator pitch about yourself
- Read and watch materials about personal elevator pitches (what they are, when you can use them, how to structure and deliver them) and explore some samples. Plan your own elevator pitch, rehearse it and film yourself delivering it (with your smartphone).
UNIT 3: Academic listening (worth 10% of the final grade):
All the activities in this Unit revolve around a TED talk in English:
- Review the key vocabulary contained in the TED talk to be worked on;
- Take a vocabulary quiz;
- Read some pre-listening questions and get ready to answer them while watching;
- Watch the TED talk;
- Answer some comprehension questions;
- Share your thoughts on your group forum.
UNIT 4: Academic reading (worth 25% of the final grade):
Learn about the AWL (Academic Word List); review AWL sub-list 1 and take a quiz about it:
- Review the structure of academic articles and take a quiz about it;
- Read an article and answer comprehension questions.
UNIT 5: Academic presentations (worth 25% of the final grade):
As a team, read some short articles (4-5 pages each) on a topic of your choice and summarize them:
- Integrate the ideas from the articles into a coherent presentation;
- Watch and read resources about how to make a great presentation with audio;
- Prepare a 7-minute group presentation with audio about your team topic.

Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
Units 1 (videos), 2 (presumes & videos), and 5 (academic presentations) are subjectively graded by dedicated international academic teachers/instructors supervising international students, having been divided into several groups, by providing thorough feedback regarding students' current performance. (outcomes: 1-7)
Units 3 (academic listening) and 4 (academic reading) are graded automatically in an objective way by the online platform Moodle, hosting the EIP course. (outcomes: 1-7)
The final projects - home-prepared PowerPoint presentations are entirely validated by the dedicated teacher in accordance of the predeveloped grading system, including the following items, among others:
- organisation of the presentation (number/clarity/layout/quality of slides);
- grammatical correctness;
- lexical richness and correctness;
- appropriateness of style;
- overall impression (convincing or unconvincing in contents?).
(outcomes: 1-7)
