Academic Language Skills: Reading, writing and speaking 2 1.N2.EP.TTP.2
Course aims:
The aim of the course is to help students achieve fluency in discussing various topics in the academic context; to familiarize students with academic vocabulary and grammatical constructions characteristic for academic writing; to improve speaking, listening and writing skills needed for studying in English

Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity:
• Speaking, writing and reading exercises based on the following topic areas: culture, globalisation, manipulation, authority, gender, race, history, country and nationality
• analysis of selected academic texts
• reading and discussing academic texts pertaining to the chosen specialty
• using the Internet and traditional data-base queries
• formulating critical opinions and supportive arguments
• using formal language as required by the chosen specialty
• giving academic presentations
• coordinating academic group discussions

Knowledge
the student knows and understands:
1. selected contemporary academic texts and the main trends of research within the chosen speciality (k_W01)
2. theories, methodology and general and detailed terminology related to teaching foreign languages (k_W02)
3. a large extent of facts and phenomena concerning teaching EFL, complex methodological terms, and general facts in the field of ELF (k_W04)
Skills
the student can:
4.formulate and solve problems concerning the discussed issues, and perform tasks in not fully predictable conditions thanks to: proper selection of sources and information, evaluation, critical analysis and synthesis of that information (k_U01)
5. analyse and synthesize various ideas and viewpoints included in academic texts within the chosen speciality: Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Literary Studies, or Cultural Studies(k_U04)
6. use, in speaking and writing, a formal language as required by the chosen specialty, by applying grammatical, lexical and stylistic rules of C2-Level academic English (k_U05)
Social competence
the student is ready to
7. understand the necessity of improving her/his command of English (k_K05)
8. participate and organize debates and group discussions (k_K04)
Kryteria oceniania
Methods and forms of evaluation:
- 20%: in-class individual and group work (outcomes: 1,2,3,4,6,7,8)
- 20%: in-class individual oral presentations (1,2,4,6,7)
- 20%: one take-home writing task (1,2,3,4,5,6)
- 40%: one in-class writing task (1,2,3,5,6,7)
Summarizing evaluation:
Weighted arithmetic average of the above.
Criteria of evaluation:
total score: 0 – 59% - mark: 2,0
total score: 60 – 68% - mark: 3,0
total score: 69 – 76% - mark: 3,5
total score: 77 – 84% - mark: 4,0
total score: 85 – 92% - mark: 4,5
total score: 93 – 100% - mark: 5,0
