Course objectives:
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with fundamental concepts and theories relevant to the study of meaning in English.

1. Studying meaning – types of meaning; semantics distinguished from pragmatics.
2. Sense relations - adjectives, nouns and verbs.
3. Figurative language.
4. Tense and aspect.
5. Scope and modality.
6. Connecting utterances to the background.

The students know:
1.selected facts and phenomena of language and linguistic theories explaining complex dependencies between them, forming the basic general knowledge in the field of English semantics and pragmatics (k_W02/P6S_WG)
2. the nature of philological science in studying meaning and the directions of its development supported by current research (k_W01/P6S_WG)
3. the complex nature and historical changes of language regarding semantics and pragrmatics (k_W05/P6S_WG)
Skills:
The students can
4. communicate with the use of specialized terminology for the English language description in semantic and pragmatic analyses of language (k_U03/P6S_UW)
5.take part in a debate presenting and evaluating different positions with reference to semantic and pragmatic dilemmas in describing English (k_U04/P6S_UK)
6. work in small groups or pairs preparing short lectures and presentations related to the topics discussed (k_U08/P6S_UO)
Social competences:
The students are ready to:
7. critically assesses the knowledge of semantic and pragmatic analyses of language and recognizes the importance of knowledge of the language in solving cognitive or social problems (k_K02/P6S_KK)
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Active classroom participation on the basis of the material prepared beforehand – 50% of the final grade (outcomes: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7)
2. The final test – 50 % of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
Criteria of evaluation
- group/pair work – 2 points: 3,0; 3-4 points: 3,5; 5-6 points: 4,0; 7-8 points: 4,5; more than 9 points: 5,0
- informed participation in classes – 2 points: 3,0; 3-4 points: 3,5; 5-6 points: 4,0; 7-8 points: 4,5; more than 9 points: 5,0
All the effects and grades are individually discussed with the students
- pass in the test at 60%
Pass in the course at 60% of the total grade
