Language skills: debating 1.N3.EP.62
Course objectives:
The objective of the course is to explore strategies for delivering effective debating speeches & the skills to debate. This is acheved by learning how to identify commonly used rhetorical devices and be familiar with how they construct meaning. The fundamental skill to be practiced will involve analysing how context helps shape the language and meaning of debate.

1. Organizarion lesson and how to write a debating speech. Education: Is a University education worth it? Instructor-led debate
2. Banned books: Should parents or other adults be able to ban books from schools and libraries? + Individual student-led debates
3. Fossil fuels v. alternative energy: Can alternative energy effectively replace fossil fuels? + Individual student-led debates
4. Russia - Ukraine war: What are the solutions to the Russia - Ukraine war? + Individual student-led debates
5. Bottled water: Should bottled water be banned? + Individual student-led debates
6. Born gay: Is sexual orientation determined at birth? + Individual student-led debates
7. Corporal punishment: Should corporal punishment be used in school? + Individual student-led debates
8. Drinking: Should the drinking age be lowered? + Individual student-led debates
9. Euthanasia and assisted suicide: Should euthanasia or physician assisted suicide be legal? + Individual student-led debates
10 Sport: What is a sport? Is golf a sport? Is sailing a sport? + Individual student-led debates
11. Homework: Is homework beneficial? + Individual student-led debates
12. Obesity: Is obesity a disease? + Individual student-led debates
13. School uniforms: Should students have to wear school uniforms? + Individual student-led debates

1. The student knows the main methods of analysis and interpretation of debating speeches (k_W04/P6S_WG).
Skills
2. The student is able to recognize different types of debates and can perform a critical analysis and assess their relevance and impact in cultural processes (k_U02/P6S_UW).
3. The student is able to create and read English-language debates and prepare elaborate presentations relating to their English studies of deabating using formal sources (k_U04/P6S_UK).
4. The student is able to use English at the level of C1 of the Common European Framework for Languages (k_U05/P6S_UK).
Social Competences
5. The student is ready to critically evaluate and solve problems arising from the implementation of professional tasks such as texts creation and language support in institutions and enterprises (k_K02/P6S_KK).
6. The student is ready to participate in various forms of cultural life (k_K04/P6S_KO).
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Active participation - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6)
2. Writing and delivering your own debating speech - 30% of the final grade (outcome 3,4,5,6)
3. A written deabating speech - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,5,6)
Criteria of evaluation:
60% = 3
80% = 4
100% = 5
