Language skills: vocabulary and structures 1 1.S3.EP.19
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to improve students’ vocabulary and structures of English language at C1 level of advancement. Through analysis and practical training the course guides students towards their Practical English Exam.

Course content
1. using prefixes/suffixes to create different parts of speech; recognizing different parts of speech.
2. using gerunds and infinitives to provide appropriate meaning.
3. recognizing and using idioms, expressions, confusable words.
4. rephrasing and transforming sentence structure.
5. training at a range of exam C1 level testing techniques, for example: word formation, gap filling, sentence transformation.

Student knows and understands:
1. grammatical and lexical rules of C1-level English, in particular, word formation, rephrasing and transforming, confusable words (k_W02/P6S_WG)
2. techniques used for testing vocabulary and structures at C1 level (k_W04/P6S_WG)
Skills
Student can:
3. analyse testing tasks using techniques of discrimination, matching, elimination, and gap-filling (k_U02/P6S_UW)
4. apply grammatical and lexical rules of C1-level English, in particular can identify and use parts of speech in a sentence (k_U05/P6S_UK)
5. rephrase and transform sentences (k_U05/P6S_UK)
6. understand, use and match expressions and idioms to a given context (k_U05/P6S_UK)
7. understand a range of spoken material and use English as a foreign language at the level of C1 (k_U05/P6S_UK)
Social competences
Student is ready to:
8. comprehend types of vocabulary and grammar aspects in order to apply appropri-ate techniques to solve testing tasks (k_K02/P6S_KK)
9. understand and accept differences between their native language and English language in terms of the concept of vocabulary and structures (k_K03/P6S_KO)
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Active participation during classes and preparation – 20% of the final grade (outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 8, 9)
2. vocabulary and structures tests - 80% of hte final grade (outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
To get a credit students need to pass all tests.
Tests marks are granted according to the following framework:
grade 2,0 (fail): 0–54%
grade 3,0 (average): 55–69%
grade 3,5 (plus average): 70–79%
grade 4,0 (good): 80–89%
grade 4,5 (plus good): 90–95%
grade 5,0 (very good): 96–100%
