Methodology of cultural studies 1.S3.EP.ECS.2
Course objectives:
The course aims to introduce students to the basic problems connected with conducting research in cultural studies. It discusses basic theoretical approaches within the discipline and analyses practical examples of research. It is also aims to help students improve their practical skills and necessary for conducting independent research and later write a thesis.

Course content:
1. The most important theoretical approaches in cultural research.
2. The concept of discourse and its analysis.
3. The concept of genealogy and genealogical analysis.
4. The concept of the Other and its representation in the media, literature and film.
5. Semiotics and deconstruction in contemporary cultural studies.

The student:
1. is familiar with the basic terminology of culture studies, including media studies, film studies, cultural geography, race/gender studies, digital cultures - (m-W-1/P6S_WG)
Skills
The student:
2. can describe selected types of culture products and practices and carry out their critical analysis and interpretation in order to determine their (various) meanings, their social impact, and their place in cultural tradition and heritage of the English-speaking countries (m-U-2/P6S_UW)
Social competences
The student:
3. shapes their own views regarding the significance of culture in the political and economic development of the society, particularly by being ready to identify ideologies and power relations that underpin cultural (re)production - (m-K-2/P6S_KK)
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Test assessing theoretical knowledge and acquaintance with basic terminology - 60% of the final grade (outcomes 1,2)
2. Presentation on a selected topic - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2)
3. Active participation in class activities - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3)
