Course objectives
The aim of the course Text analysis for specific purposes is to develop the skills connected with reading business texts for specific purposes so that the student will have the ordered knowledge of the English business language; know the lexical-grammatical and stylistic rules of the English business language, and the rules of the selection of means for expressing specific types of information.

1. Introduction. Understanding organizations. (warm-up exercises).
2. Different kinds of business documents. Order form.
Economy and the climate change - group discussion.
3. Making use of business blogs and books – reading comprehension exercises.
Basic business documents – invoices.
4. Buying and selling (exercises)
International trade – terms and conditions.
5. Corporate finances - balance sheet.
Contract for sale/purchase of goods
6. Being a worker (exercises).
Corporate policy “Google’s 10 Golden rules”. Analysing contract of employment.
7. Marketing mix. Analysing marketing strategies. Preparing an individual marketing mix for a product/service.
Charity or competition? – analysing a short text about the policy of Bill Gates.
8. E-commerce. The future of online business.
Social media and business ethics – article, solving ethical problems in business (group work).
9. EU and international markets (reading comprehension exercises).
Analysing an economic report.

Knowledge
Students know and understand
1. vocabulary, grammar, structures and stylistics in English at C1 level; technical, specialist and official (formal) English used for business documents (such as invoice, balance sheet, job contract, contract for sale/purchase of goods, order form, report) and articles from English-language business magazines (k_W02/P6S_WG)
2. specific terminology and techniques used in reading and analysing English business texts in order to solve specific problems and express business information in the sphere of finances, marketing, international trade, commerce and company management.(k_W04/P6S_WG)
Skills
Students can
3. use different phrases, structures and stylistic rules in orde to study and interpret business articles and documents in English, and complete reading comprehension exercises in the area of finances, marketing, international trade, commerce and company management. (k_U01/P6S_UW)
4. recognize different types of specialist documents including invoice, balance sheet, job contract, contract for sale/purchase of goods, order form, report (k_U03/P6S_UW)
5. make presentations on topics related to business, marketing, economics, e-commerce, trade, business culture, work and career using formal sources (k_U05/P6S_UK)
Social competences
Students are ready to
6. act in stressful situations, like public speeches, giving presentations or debating and expressing their own opinions about the importance of e-commerce, corporate policies, business ethics in relation to social media and the connection betwen business operations and climate crisis (k_K02/P6S_KK)
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learnign outcomes:
1. Active particiaption in classes - 10% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6)
2. Students’ presentations on a business article and a set of exercises connected with the article - 30% of the final grade (outcomes: 1,2,3,4,5)
3. Written test - 60% of the final grade (outcomes: 1,2,4)
Criteria of evaluation
- Students’ presentations - grades based on points; 3 aspects are taken into consideration: proper use of business vocabulary and structures 1-10 points; knowledge of the business theme discussed in the selected article 1-10 points; correctness of the reading comprehension tasks prepared by the student 1-10 points;
16-18 points – 3,0
19-21 points – 3,5
22-24 points – 4,0
25-27 points – 4,5
28-30 points – 5,0
- Written test:
41-46 points - 3,0
47-52 points 3,5
53-58 points – 4,0
59-64 points – 4,5
65-70 points – 5,0
All grades are discussed with students individually.
