Course objectives
The aim of the course is to: develop writing skills through doing individual and group exercises, analyzing English texts and sample essays, as well as producing well-organized, stylistically and grammatically correct texts at C1 level of proficiency. The course draws student's attention to a more formal writing style

1. Academic writing: organizing the body of your essays – revision and extension.
2. Formal/informal style of writing – exercises.
3. Formal/informal register – in-class writing task.
4. Giving examples in essays – exercises.
5. Writing definitions – exercises.
6. Definition essay – analysis.
7. Definition essay - in-class writing task.
8. Evaluating and being critical – exercises.
9. For and against essay – analysis.
10. For and against essay - in-class writing task.
11. Comparing and contrasting – exercises.
12. Comparison/contrast essay – analysis.
13. Comparison/contrast essay - in-class writing task.
14. Writing final essay (definition, for and against , or comparison/contrast essay)
15. Essay results. Discussing students' papers. Credits.

The student knows and understands:
1. elements of academic discourse and linguistic considerations relating to the analysis and production of written texts in formal, academic style, in the form of definition essays, for and against essays and comparison/contrast essays (k_W07/P6S_WG)
2. the role of English as a cognitive means and a tool used for public communication in a written form (especially definition essays, for and against essays and comparison/contrast essays) (k_W03/P6S_WG)
Skills
The student can:
3. read and create English-language texts with proper structure, using the structures and expressions characteristic of formal register used in media and business. (k_U04/P6S_UK)
4. use English at the level of C1 of the Common European Framework for Languages in writing formal texts suitable for public communication (including definition essays, for and against essays and comparison/contrast essays) ( k_U05/P6S_UK)
Social competence
The student is ready to:
5. manage time and prioritize the implementation of various tasks related to writing whole texts, including definition essays, for and against essays and comparison/contrast essays with th use of formal vocabulary and structures (k_K01/P6S_KK)

Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes
1. Active participation in classes - 10% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)
2. Four short in-class writing assignments - 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)

4 pluses = 5,0
3 pluses = 4,5
2 pluses = 4,0
1 plus = 3,5
3. Final in-class essay writing - 60% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)

Grade 2.0 (fail) – 0-59%
Grade 3.0 (average) – 60-67%
Grade 3.5 (plus average) – 68-75%
Grade 4.0 (good) – 76-84%
Grade 4.5 (plus good) – 85-92%
Grade 5.0 (very good) – 93-100%
