Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to develop non-heritage students’ basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the Chinese language.

In-class activities are designed to increase students' learning motivation based on the topics below:
Book 1 Lesson 4: How much is this pen?
1) Quantified Nouns
2) Sums of Money
3) Specified and Numbered Nouns
4) Prices Per Unit
5) Sentence with Direct Object and Indirect Object
Book 1 Lesson 5: There are five members in my family
1) Specified Nouns Modified by Nouns or Pronouns
2) Nouns Modified by Other Nouns Indicating Possession
3) The Whole Before the Part
Book 1 Lesson 6: I'm thinking about buying a new camera
1) Large Numbers
2) 多 as an Indefinite Number
3) Nouns Modified by Stative Verbs
Book 1 Lesson 7: Your French really sounds nice
1) Verb Object Compounds (VO)
2) Progressive Aspect
3) Verb Object as the Topic
4) 好 and 難 as Adverbial Prefixes
5) Predicative Complements (describing the manner of the degree of the action)

Direct instruction, interactive lecture (quick pairings or small group discussions) and collaborative learning (role-playing or problem solving)

Students should know:
1. the structures and stroke orders of Chinese characters (k_W03)
2. basic words and essential grammatical structures of Mandarin Chinese (k_W01)
3. Culture and societies in Chinese speaking area related to the course materials.(k_W05)
Skills
After the course, students should be able to:
4. recognize everyday, high-frequency words in Mandarin Chinese which are immediately relevant and delivered clearly and slowly, repeated, and supported by context (k_U01, k_U09)
5. master the Mandarin Chinese phonetic system (pinyin and tones) with satisfactory pronunciation (k_U04, k_U09)
6. read, write level appropriate passages in Chinese (k_U04, k_U09)

Students should be able to
7. deepen their understanding of cultures in Chinese speaking area in general or in some particular aspect(s) (k_K04)
