Psychology of memory and remembering 1.2.5-Z-EC-PMR
Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to broaden students’ knowledge regarding psychology of memory, organization of memory, its types and functions. The course objectives are to be accomplished by:
1. Introducing students into the field of psychology of memory (Process and Types of Memory), specialized terminology and key concept in the field.
2. Improving learners’ understanding of what the neuroscience and psychology of memory can (and can’t) tell us.
3. Helping develop strategies that can be used by students to improve learning and memory.

Course content
1. Introduction: What is memory?
2. How do we make memories? Stages of memory/stages of processing: Encoding, Storage, Retrieval
3. Organization of memory, forms of memory storage: Short-term memory, long-term memory, sensory memory
4. The role of three main brain structure involved in memory formation and consolidation (hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum)
5. Why do we forget? What is the role of forgetting? Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) phenomenon and feeling-of-knowing (FOK)
6. Understanding memory through movies (selected propositions)- Discussion
a) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
b) Memento
c) The Return of the Soldier
d) The Vow
7. The role of emotions in the process of remembering and learning
8. How to learn to remember better - Mnemonics, mind maps, memorizing speeches, words, numbers, faces, etc.

Classes online: practical project, slide shows, individual and group work, discussion, analysis and reflection on the texts/movies students

Assessment criteria
Forms of evaluation of the learning outcomes:
1. Active participation in activities and discussion - 40% of the final grade (outcome 2,3,4)
2. Creative main tasks - 20% each of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,5)
1. Writing an essay on the role of emotions in the process of remembering and learning (20%)
2. Preparing a mnemonic excercise for the whole group (20%)
3. Preparing and performing a project on memory-related movie (20%)
Grading system:
active participation and one main task - grade 3
active participation and two main tasks - grade 4
active participation and three main tasks - grade 5
pass at 60% of the final grade
