Language skills: reading and listening 1 1.S3.EP.5
Course objectives:
The aim of the course is to improve students’ understanding of spoken and written texts and to raise student`s language fluency in comprehension to level C1 (according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for languages) in regards to understanding various texts carrying hidden meaning.
It aims at preparing students for their C1-Level Practical English Exam.

Course content:
Reading comprehension: different forms of texts on the basis of which students have to find particular information (skimming, scanning, guessing from context, paraphrasing).
Listening comprehension: understanding of informative monologues, conversations and short fragments presenting some a range of themes/issues. Reading and listening materials are related to such areas of human activity as culture, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, art etc.

Methods of instruction/ forms of classroom activity:
analysis of different types of written and spoken texts, various forms of exercises, in-class discussions, project work, ICT tools/MSTeams if needed

1. have a proficiency in English at C1 level, know grammatical, lexical and stylistic rules of correct uses of English, as well as of various registers to be able to comprehend various types of texts (k_W03/P6S_WG),
2. know of the main methods of analysis and interpretation of uses of language in spoken and written texts (k_W04/ P6S_WG),

Students can:
3. comprehend spoken and written texts in English (relative to C1 level) to identify the general point/attitude and to find specific information (k_U04/P6S_UK; k_U05/P6S_UK)
4. select appropriate strategies to do different types of reading and listening tasks (k_U02/ P6S_UK)
Social competences
Students can:
5. comprehend and assess types of reading and listening texts in order to apply ap-propriate techniques to solve testing tasks (k_K02/ P6S_KK)
Assessment criteria
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Active participation - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
2. Project - 25% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,5)
3. Test - 55% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
pass at 60%
