Translation of literary texts 1.S3.EP.TS.7
Course objectives:
- introducing students to the specificity of the work of a translator of literary texts (poetry and prose),
- developing the ability to translate texts from English into Polish and vice versa (starting with short poems and ending with fragments of literary texts)
- using dictionaries,
- drawing students' attention to the differences in the structure of sentences and syntax between the two languages, issues of fidelity to translations and the issue of language style in relation to particular types of text.

Course content
1. Functional approach to translation.
2. The role of styling in translation and symptomatic reading of the translation.
3. Lawrence Venuti and his theory of "remaindera".
4. Translation constant and their diachronic character.
5. The cultural relevance of 'remaindera'.
6. Functionalism in terms of Christiane Nord.
7. Skopo theory.
8. Text functions according to Bühler and Jakobson.
9. Theory of textual translation.
10. Domesticated and alienated translation.
11. The theory of the "golden mean" by Jolanta Kozak.
12. Translation as a hermeneutic triad of textures, images and a deep sense.
13. Translation in terms of the Even-Zohar polysystem theory.

3. has the ability to search for, analyze, select, and use information related to translation by consulting academic and popular sources and tools, including electronic ones, apply techniques for collecting data, and produce good-quality translations (m-U-1/P6S_UW)
4. is able to analyze target language (TL) translations in relation to their source language (SL) texts and evaluate the former objectively and constructively - with the focus on literary texts (m-U-2/P6S_UW)
Social competences: Student
5. is ready to make responsible and ethical use of translation products and practices in and out of the classroom - regarding literary texts (m-K-1/P6S_KR)
6. shapes their own views regarding the significance of reliable translation for the development of the society and its general and specialized information needs (m-K-2/P6S_KK)
Assessment criteria
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes:
1. Active in-class participation: 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,6)
2. Written assignments: 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,5,6)
3. Final test: 30% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,4,)
Criteria of evaluation:
60% = 3
80% = 4
100% = 5
