Course objectives
The aim of the course is to improve students’ language fluency (according to the criteria suggested by CEFR for languages) in terms of raising their level of understanding of reading and listening texts at B2+/C1 level.
The course focuses on:
1. training to understand different reading and listening texts at B2+/C1 level,
2. training reading for general information, specific information, reading for the understanding context of a message,
3. training listening for general information, detailed information, and basic understanding of different types of English pronunciation.

Course content
Listening comprehension: training in listening to understand the meaning of a range of spoken material at C1 level, including lectures, radio broadcasts, speeches and talks, monologues, conversations held by two or three people. Training in a range of listening techniques, for example: listening for general information, listening for specific information, matching, gap-filling, paraphrasing, note-taking.
Reading comprehension: training in understanding different forms of written texts at C1 level such as: de-scriptions, analyses, reports, and critical opinions. Training in a range of reading techniques, for example: matching, discriminating, selecting, grasping general or detailed information.

Graduate knows and understands:
1. various types of registers in listened and written English texts at the B2+/C1 level, typical for public communication (k_W03/P6S_WG).
2. how to analyse and interpret reading and listening types of texts at B2+/C1 level (k_W04/P6S_WG).
Skills
Graduate can:
3. understand listened and written texts related to public communication at B2+ level, and rec-ognise C1 level of reading and listening texts (k-U02/P6S_UW).
4. analyse written and listened information from various sources at B2+/C1 level using tech-niques of matching, gap-filling, guessing from context, skimming, scanning, paraphrasing, dis-criminating, and grasping general and detailed information (k_U07/P6S_UO).
Social competences
Graduate is ready to:
5. recognise and accept linguistic and cultural differences in written and listened texts in public communication at B2+/C1 level (k_K03/P6S_KO).
Assessment criteria
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes
1. Active in-class performance - 20% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5,)
2. Mid-term test - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
3. Final test - 40% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
To get a credit students need to pass all tests.

55-63% - 3,0
64-72% – 3,5
73-81% – 4,0
82-90% – 4,5
91-100% – 5,0
