Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to develop non-heritage students’ basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the Chinese language.

Course content
In-class activities are designed to increase students' learning motivation based on the topics below:
Book 1 Lesson 1: What is your name?
1) Sentences with verbs 姓, 叫 and 是
2) Simple type of questions with the particle 嗎
3) Questions with a question word (QW)
4) Abbreviated questions with the particle 呢
Book 1 Lesson 2: Hello, good morning
1) Simple sentences with stative verbs (SV)
2) SV-Not-SV questions
Book 1 Lesson 3: I like to watch movies
1) Subject-verb-object sentences
2) Verb-not-verb questions
3) Sentences with the auxiliary verbs (AV)
4) Transposed objects

Student can:
4. recognize everyday, high-frequency words in Mandarin Chinese which are immediately relevant to oneself and delivered clearly and slowly, repeated, and supported by context (k_U01/P6S_UW)
5. master the Mandarin Chinese phonetic system (pinyin and tones) with satisfactory pronunciation (k_U04/P6S_UK)
6. read, write and type level appropriate passages in Chinese (k_U03/P6S_UW)
7. answer briefly questions in Mandarin Chinese about personal details (k_U04/P6S_UK)
