STUDY ENGLISH PHILOLOGY

If you want to be well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market, study English Philology full time at the University of Opole. Our Master of Arts graduate study programme in English Philology offers an opportunity to grow and interact in a challenging academic environment. Studying English Philology at MA level, apart from developing practical language skills at a high C2 proficiency level of CEFR for languages, encompasses deepening students’ knowledge of selected fields of philological studies. The students may choose to follow one of offered academic paths and pursue their MA thesis in: Literary studies/Cultural studies or Linguistics/Translation studies.

The classes on full time studies are held from Monday through Friday. Some courses are conducted online, others are held in classrooms on the university site. All lecturers are available to students during their office hours to discuss academic issues relating to the courses. 

Master of Arts graduate studies finish with an MA defense and an MA degree. Graduate studies also prepare candidates for doctoral studies in a similar field.

WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AT OPOLE UNIVERSITY?

A professional team of academic teachers and lecturers supports and guides the graduates in their intellectual growth. Students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology and a modern computer room with several stands. The room with interpretation booths is used for interpreting classes. Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of Anglo-Saxon literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching).

STUDENT MOBILITY PERSPECTIVES

Our students can enroll in an exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by the University of Opole, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language. Our partners are, among others, in Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, HungarySpain, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Germany, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and Italy. FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates of English Philology finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking at C2 level, ability to search for information in various sources, to analyze and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a career in, for example:

·advertising agencies

·fundraising organizations

·commercial, corporate or other business institutions

·research institutes

·many other fields that require proficient knowledge of English and liberal arts education.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduates of first-cycle studies in philology with a C1 level of English are elligible to apply for English Philolgy MA level studies. The acceptance will be based on theresults of the BA diploma grade.The candidates need to provide a certificate confirming their command of English at C1 level of CEFR for languages.

Professional status:

Graduates of English Philology realizing the elective module in Literary studies as their major have general humanistic education as well as a nuanced understanding of literary studies with its specific research paradigms (historical, interpretative, critical), analytic traditions (formalist, structuralist, poststructuralist and beyond) and prioritized research orientations (comparative analysis of different literary traditions, literary translation, literary theory and criticism, reception of literature. They have a detailed knowledge of selected methods of analyzing literary texts and practices (in their diachronic and synchronic aspects) with a focus on the readerly experience and critical interpretation. They can search for, analyze, select, evaluate and synthesize information related to literature by consulting various academic and popular sources and tools, including digitalized online repositories. They can communicate about own research and reading on a range of selected topics within literary studies in speech and writing applying the conventions and styles of academic presentation (English for Academic Purposes, Proficiency in English/C2 of CEFR for Languages). They can set priorities, cooperate and work alone, as well as manage the time and resources while doing research in literary studies. They can express their reasoned opinions, including critique, on selected academic issues related to literary research; they can think logically and can be creative. The skills acquired enable them to seek employment in publishing houses, translation agencies, travel agencies, cultural institutions, business or service sectors that require proficient command of English and knowledge of culture and literature of English-speaking countries. Graduate studies also prepare candidates for doctoral studies in a similar field.

Learning outcomes

Graduate of English Philology knows and understands
• the place and significance of the philological science among humanities and its analytical and methodological tools
• expanded formal terminology and theories of linguistic, literary and cultural studies
• the role of English as a cognitive means and a tool used for studying
• a wide range of methods of analysis and interpretation of culture products analysed in the studied disciplines, including theories and research schools within English philology
• main trends and achievements within the studied discipline
• an extensive range of details of academic discourse in relation to the studied discipline
• legal, ethical and linguistic considerations of their professional activity resulting from the studied discipline
• principles of copyright and its protection in relation to various cultural products, in particular in the field of English philology

Graduate of English Philology can
• use the terminology and take theoretical positions resulting from English studies to formulate and solve problems or carry out the tasks of formal and professional character
• be innovative in solving complex and new problems by making right choices, appraisals and critical interpretation of gained knowledge
• refer to arguments and draw logical conclusions using appropriate methods and expended tools, adapting them to the new needs, and also developing them from scratch
• read and create advanced English language texts and prepare presentations in the field of English philology, using formal sources
• speak English at C2 level, with particular emphasis on academic discourse, taking part in the specialist communication and conducting a formal debate
• independently formulate research problems and use appropriate tools and methods to analyse and discuss them with other specialists in the field of English philology
• manage group activities aimed at developing language skills and study techniques ensuring success in learning
• use the acquired knowledge and skills to deepen their academic interests in the intra- and interdisciplinary dimension
• translate selected texts from their mother tongue into English in order to use them or make them available to other students
• use another foreign language at B2+ level

Graduate of English Philology is ready to:
• prioritize the implementation of various tasks related to studying and professional work
• critically evaluate and solve problems arising from the implementation of professional tasks such as text creation and translation or language support in institutions and enterprises
• accept linguistic and cultural differences and recognize them as natural professional factors
• participate in various forms of cultural life
• comply with the rules of professional ethics and develop their English language skills in the process of lifelong learning
