If you want to be well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market, study English Philology with Business English speciality which follows the practical profile of the undergraduate studies. University of Opole in cooperation with Nutricia company have created an innovative programme that allows the undergraduates to link their academic growth with practical application of knowledge and skills. Students learn how to function in an international manufacturing company by developing their skills in analysis, planning, engineering, economics, or IT. They learn to use English in speech and writing at C1 level of CEFR for languages. The programme comprises several business subjects, such as business negotiations, international commerce and trade law to name a few (full information on the study programme is availablehere. BA studies finish with a BA defence and a BA degree.

In the course of the studies students can do internships (3rd semester – 450 hours) at companies from various fields of business in Opole, or at their place of living. The BA thesis can be written in the business organisation under the supervision of an academic scholar and a business specialist from a given company.

 
What makes a difference at University of Opole?

A professional team of academic teachers supports and guides the undergraduates in their intellectual growth. The students are educated in modern lecture rooms in the newly renovated historical building of Collegium Maius equipped with modern audiovisual technology. Our library and the reading room offer access to an extensive collection of Anglo-Saxon literature (more than 37 thousand volumes devoted to various aspects of culture and language of English speaking countries and 100 titles of journals and magazines devoted to teaching).

The practical profile offers a unique Internship programme in a company. Some of the classes and the internship are held in business organizations. 

Student affairs, options for development, exchange and scholarship

Our students can enroll in a student exchange programme Erasmus+ offered by the University of Opole, which allows for studying abroad for a semester or two, developing foreign language communication skills, learning about culture of a foreign country and gaining professional knowledge via a foreign language.

Students can take part in a programme of competence development which offers visits at BPO organizations (PricewaterhouseCoopers, Capgemini, IBM, ATOS, and Stefanini), certified trainings in accounting and HR, workshops and graduate internships in companies with which the Faculty of Philology has cooperating agreements.


What are future career prospects after the studies?

Undergraduates of Business English can seek employment in small, medium, or large manufacturing companies, design and administrative entities, and private enterprises. Our students finish their studies with strong communication skills in English in writing and speaking, the ability to search for information in various sources, to analyse and synthesize information, and to work effectively both independently and in teams. They are well prepared for a career requiring advanced command of English in e.g. corporations, business institutions, in planning, logistics, or production and enterprise project management divisions. Undergraduate studies also prepare candidates for graduate studies in a similar field, e.g. Business English or other linguistic and public administration specialities.

Citizens of Poland and EU/EFTA as well as the Pole's Card holders study free of charge

Undergraduate studies prepare candidates for graduate studies in a similar field.

Professional status:

Undergraduates of English Philology Practical Profile with Business English elective module have knowledge of general English and English for specific purposes. They have knowledge of the business sector and are able to negotiate and communicate in a business context requiring knowledge of English in speech and writing at the C1 level in accordance to CEFR. They know the fundamentals of economics, project management, change management, international trade, and commercial law. They also have knowledge of technology and computer science in the business context. They are prepared to work in small, medium, and large production enterprises, business projects, economic and administrative units, in private companies, corporations, business institutions, in planning, logistics or production departments. The study programme includes 960 hours of internship.

Teaching standards

Undergraduate of English Philology Practical Profile knows and understands:
• position and importance of the English language and philological studies in the fields of business, culture, economy, information technology, law, media, politics, science and sociology;
• vocabulary, grammar, structures and stylistics in English at C1 level; technical, specialist and official (formal) English used for specific purposes;
• techniques used in negotiations, communication, debates, public speaking, presentations, analysis and interpretation of texts, for IT purposes and to learn correct pronunciation;
• specific terminology and techniques used in writing, critical analysis, listening, speaking and reading in English in order to solve specific problems; ways to express specific types of information;
• legal, ethical and linguistic considerations of their professional activity resulting from the studied discipline;
• principles of copyright and its protection in relation to various cultural products, in particular in the field of English philology;
• the contents associated with the elective module (as specified in a separate list of module learning outcomes).

Undergraduate of English Philology Practical Profile can:
• use different phrases, structures and stylistic rules in order to formulate and solve problems or complete formal or professional tasks both in writing and orally;
• be innovative in solving problems through proper selection, evaluation and analysis of the obtained information;
• recognize and write different types of specialist texts and create their own, coherent and logical arguments, and draw conclusions;
• conduct basic research, search, and analysis, select and use information using different sources, methods and computer literacy;
• read, listen to, and create texts in English, and make presentations on topics related to business, culture, economics, computer science, law, media, politics, science and sociology, using formal sources;
• use English at C1 level, with particular emphasis on specialist vocabulary, professional terms, technical terms, jargon, pronunciation, etc., especially when listening, writing, reading and speaking;
• formulate research problems and use appropriate tools and methods to analyse and discuss them with other specialists in the field of English philology;
• participate in debates, negotiations and discussions, present and appraise different opinions and positions related to a given topic;
• take up individual and group activities aimed at developing language skills and study techniques ensuring success in learning and work;
• plan and organize individual and team work; continue to learn independently;
• translate selected texts from their mother tongue into English in order to use them or make them available to other students;
