Professional status:

The undergraduates of English in Public Communication, apart from earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, become highly trained professional communicators. They are proficient in English at C1 level, have specialist knowledge of the main trends in linguistics, communication and media studies, theory and practice of persuasion, or critical discourse analysis. They have extensive knowledge of how language operates in such domains as politics, culture, society as well as in the literature on the contemporary human condition. They understand the legal and economic contexts of public communication, and contemporary journalistic practices. They have acquired the skills of accessing, analyzing and critically evaluating information in the public domain, as well as presenting it in a variety of forms, genres and topics. They are aware of various linguistic conventions of representation in the media and their influence on the public. With respect to social competences, the graduates also develop sensitivity to intercultural differences in the use of English and ethical standards in public communication. The undergraduates can find employment in a broad range of fields involving public communication such as advertising, journalism, publishing, public relations and public affairs, business communication, marketing, and education. They may also be employed in public administration on a regional, national or international level or work for cultural institutions, corporations or NGOs.

Teaching standards

Student should pass all the subjects (lectures, classes) following the teaching study programme requirements. Not all the subjects are passed with an exam, however, every subject must be passed. If a subject is passed without a grade, the student receives an annotation “zal” (pass) in the index book and in the student permanent record card. The subject is also passed if the student receives a positive grade. If a subject is passed with a grade, the student needs to receive a positive final grade in the subject. If a subject is passed with an exam grade, the student needs to receive a positive final grade in the exam, however, prior to the exam, the student needs to pass the subject (with or without a grade). The information on the types of credits required in particular subjects is available in the study programme. To complete the studies the student is required to write a diploma paper and successfully pass the diploma defense in a form of an oral exam. The final grade on the diploma is a weighted average of all the grades received in all the subjects during the studies (50%), the grade for the diploma paper (25%) and the grade for the diploma defense (25%).
