Undergraduate Philology studies prepare students for further education in graduate studies in humanities.

Professional status:

The undergraduates of Philology, majoring in English for Tourism have general knowledge of the language, literature, culture and history of the English language area. They know the legal and economic conditions for the functioning of tourism-related institutions in the sphere of cultural, media, promotional and advertising activities. They know the aims, organization and functioning of tourism-related institutions. They have knowledge about the recipients of culture, media, promotional and advertising activities in tourism as well as methods of diagnosing their needs and assessing the quality of services. They know the methodology of performing tasks, standards, procedures and good practices used in tourism. They know pragmatic and stylistic rules of spoken and written genres of expression, typical for tourist services. They independently plan, organize and implement typical tourism-related projects in the sphere of cultural, media, promotional and advertising activities. In addition, they are able to speak and write in a coherent and precise manner (in Polish and English) on topics related to tourist service, using the achievements of both philological sciences and other disciplines. They have the ability to use English in speech and writing at C1 level of proficiency of CEFL and demonstrate basic translation skills as well as skills in text analysis and interpretation. They can participate in business communication related to tourist services (creating correspondence, conducting conversations, preparing documentation, etc.). The acquired skills allow them to take a job in cultural institutions and in the sector of tourism services especially requiring advanced knowledge of a foreign language. The Study Programme of Philology with Major in English for Tourism includes 450 hours of internship.

A graduate of English for Tourism knows and understands
- at an advanced level - selected facts, objects and linguistic phenomena as well as linguistic methods and theories explaining the complex relationships between them, constituting the basic general knowledge of philology, forming its theoretical foundations and selected issues of detailed linguistic knowledge;
- practical applications of linguistic knowledge, e.g. in cultural, media, translation or business services, with particular emphasis on tourist services;
- theories, methodology and general and detailed terminology in the field of linguistics;
- methods of analysis and interpretation of texts and cultural products within selected traditions, theories and research schools in linguistics (with the possibility of linking them with methods specific to communication studies);
- fundamental dilemmas of modern philology in the field of its research and application to solve social problems;
- basic economic, legal and other conditions and concepts related to philological research and its application;
- rules of the protection of industrial property and copyright, and forms of individual entrepreneurship development;
- construction and functions of systems and institutions relevant to the scope of professional activity specific to philology (including cultural, media, translation, business services, with particular emphasis on tourist service), characteristics and needs of their recipients.

A graduate of English for Tourism is be able to:
- use their philological knowledge – that is to formulate and solve complex and unusual problems regarding the use of language and linguistic knowledge;
- perform tasks in conditions not fully predictable by proper selection of sources and information derived from them, assessment, critical analysis and synthesis of this information as well as selection and application of appropriate methods and tools, including advanced information and communication techniques (ICT);
- formulate and analyze research problems, choose methods and tools to solve them using knowledge of linguistics (with the possibility of including knowledge from related sciences);
- conduct basic social research necessary to diagnose the needs of culture and media recipients;
- communicate using specialized terminology of language description;
- take part in the debate - present and evaluate various opinions and positions in the thematic field of philology and discuss them;
- use English at the level of at least C1 of CEFL;
- plan and organize work - individual and in a team;
- plan and implement own lifelong learning independently.

A graduate of English for Tourism is ready to:
- critically assess possessed philological knowledge and recognise the importance of language knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems;
- fulfill social obligations, co-organise activities for the social environment, initiate actions for public interest, think and act in an entrepreneurial manner;
- responsibly perform professional roles, including compliance with the principles of professional ethics and caring for the achievements and traditions of the profession;
- participate in cultural life and use its various forms;
- function competently, responsibly and ethically.
