A graduate of the master's five-year "psychology" program receives a thorough theoretical and practical preparation for the profession of a psychologist. During various courses she/he acquires knowledge in the field of theoretical psychology (eg. general and developmental psychology) and applied knowledge (eg. psychology of advertising, psychology of addictions).

Theoretical knowledge is combined with practical application in psychological diagnosis, psychological counseling and solving real life psychological problems. The Institute offers optional classes chosen by the student according to their interests and the possibility of participating in trainings inside and outside of classes.

The student also masters knowledge in such areas as the biological basis of human behavior, philosophy, or sociology. The graduate is well prepared to conduct scientific research, especially thanks to the acquired knowledge in the field of methodology with statistics and psychometry.

The Institute also offers courses in English, as well as national (MOST) and international student exchange within the EU (Erasmus program).

Graduates can apply for admission to doctoral studies and other postgraduate courses.

Professional status:

A graduate of psychology has the right to practice the profession, resulting from the act on the profession of a psychologist (Journal of Laws [Dz.U.] 2019.0.1026, i.e. the Act of June 8, 2001, on the profession of psychologist and professional self-government of psychologists). The graduate who completed an additional teaching module has been provided with sufficient professional qualifications to perform the profession of a psychologist in educational institutions. Legal basis: Regulation Of the Minister of National Education of 01/08/2017, on the specific qualifications required from teachers (as amended, Journal of Laws [Dz.U.] 2019, item 465).

Teaching standards

Student should pass all the subjects according to the study program (lectures, exercises, conservatories, laboratories). The study program is in accordance with the standards for 5 year master studies in psychology (Ministry of Education and Science regulation from 12th July 2007, Dz.U. 2007, Nr 164, attach. 96). No every subject ends with an exam, exercises end with a passing grade. The requirement to pass a subject is a positive (passing) grade for each given subject. To attend an exam student must have a passing grade for the accompanying exercises. Each student should write a master thesis and present it to his supervisor at the end of tenth semester, and subsequently defend it with a positive result before the Institute Board during a master exam. The master exam consists of two parts: exam from the studies and the master thesis defense. The final diploma grade is a sum of: 1/2 of the arithmetical mean from the grades collected during the studies, 1/4 of master thesis grade and 1/4 of the master exam grade.

Learning outcomes

The student should complete all subjects in accordance with the applicable curriculum (lectures, exercises, seminars, laboratories). During studies, the student gains knowledge, skills and social competence according to the Polish Qualifications Framework, level 7, which includes the extended level of learning outcomes in Psychology. The studies' programme complies with the teaching standards for a uniform Master's Degree in Psychology and has been approved by the Senate of the University of Opole in Resolution 49/2016-2020, of May 25, 2017. Some courses end with an exam, others end with graded assignments. The condition for completing the course is obtaining a positive grade in the course provided in the study program for a given subject. The student should write a thesis Master's thesis and present it to the supervisor at the end of semester X, and then defend it with a positive result before the Institute Committee during the master's examination. The master's exam comprises two parts: an examination in the field of specialist knowledge from the period of studies and a defence of the thesis. The final grade on the diploma is: 1/2 of the arithmetic mean of the examination grades and written credits to the index; 1/4 of the grade for the thesis; 1/4 of the grade for the master's exam.
