Course objectives:
The main aim of the course is providing the students with basic knowledge required to understand and analyse language and linguistic data. Students become familiar with basic linguistic terminology; get to understand language as a meaning-making tool and a means of communication; become aware of how language defines sociocultural reality. As a result, students are better prepared to work on improving their communicative competence and cultural sensitivity.

Course content:
Class 1: Course introduction.
Class 2: Basic notions in linguistics. Cognitivism and generativism: the two competing approaches to language;
Class 3: Phonology and phonetics: the sounds of language;
Class 4: Morphology: words and word formation processes;
Class 5: Test (classes 2-4);
Classes 6-7: Syntax and sentence structure: parts of speech and sentence; the basics of phrases and syntax trees;
Class 8: Semantics: academic approaches to linguistic meaning;
Class 9: Test (classes 6-8);
Class 10: Austinian pragmatics and the theory of speech acts; constative and performative speech acts; locution, illocution and perlocution;
Class 11: Searle’s illocutionary speech acts; Grice’s maxims;
Class 12: Wilson and Sperber’s relevance theory;
Class 13: The theories of discourse analysis;
Class 14: Corpus linguistics and digital humanities; contemporary approaches to linguistics;
Class 15: Test (classes 10-14).

Knowledge:
1. Students are familiar with basic linguistic terminology and theories of linguistics (k_W02/P6S_WG).
2. Students know main methods of analysis and interpretation of public communication tools, including cultural conditions of English speaking countries (k_W04/P6S_WG).
3. Students understand the complex nature of linguistic phenomena, their evolution and multiple functions in public communication (k_W05/P6S_WG)
Skills:
4. Students are able to use the linguistics terminology and take theoretical standpoints in reference to theoretical models derived from research in communication, media and language studies (k_U01/ P6S_UW).
5. Students can use the acquired linguistic knowledge and skills to deepen their academic interests in the interdisciplinary dimension (k_U09/P6S_UU).
Kryteria oceniania
Forms of evaluation of learning outcomes
1. Informed participation - 25% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4)
2. Tests - up to 75% of the final grade (outcome 1,2,3,4,5)
