Environmental protection-a key to sustainable development KS-JO-6-11-EP
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the concept of sustainable development, with special regard to environmental protection, as the key element of this concept. Students will get to know the most important contemporary environmental problems and solutions to these problems, by using alternative energy sources inter alia. In addition, students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the professional phrases appearing in English-language publications in the field of techniques and technologies of environmental protection and will develop the ability to use English-language online resources in collecting information concerning the state of the environment.

KNOWLEDGE
− knows and understands the concept of sustainable development and the importance of environmental protection in this concept
− knows and understands the most important contemporary environmental problems and solutions
− knows the basic techniques to improve the quality of the environment and understands the purposefulness of their application in sustainable development
− knows and understands the need for alternative energy sources development and is able to assess their impact on the environment
SKILLS
− is able to define the following expressions: sustainable development, conventional energy, renewable energy, alternative energy sources, greenhouse effect, global warming, PM10 dust, PM2.5 dust, smog, acid rain, ozone layer
− is able to assess the impact of technologies using different energy sources on the environment
− is able to indicate solutions to the most important contemporary environmental problems
is able to apply basic, generally available techniques to improve the quality of the environment, e.g. waste segregation technique at the source
− is able to use English-language electronic sources (browsers, selected literature databases) to collect materials for final work
SOCIAL COMPETENCES (ATTITUDES)
− demonstrates responsibility related to the deadline for preparing the final essay
− demonstrates the responsibility associated with the need to maintain contact with the lecturer and other course participants
− is active in materials posted on the MTeams
− actively cooperates with the lecturer and other course participants

Assessment methods and criteria:
− Form: exercises
− Passing conditions: credit with mark. Tasks for self-completion, preparation of a final work (essay/ PP presentation)
